I’m Sebastian, a PhD Researcher at KU Leuven and UCLouvain, where I study the climate system of Antarctica and the links between its components. What determines the surface mass balance of the ice sheet? How does variability in Southern Ocean sea ice concentrations impact atmospheric processes? What is the importance of internal variability compared to the influence of the subtropics? Getting a better understanding of the Antarctic climate system is really important to make more accurate predictions of, for example, future sea level rise.

My background is in meteorology (Leipzig, Bergen) and climate system sciences (Grenoble), but my studies also included a few more or less random subjects, like glaciology or the study of paleolithic cave paintings (definitely not my core expertise though…).

If you want to get me talking, ask me about weather and climate extremes, cold climates, or colourmaps (never gets boring)!
