APECS Belgium BRINGS POLAR SCIENCE to your school!
Today is the first day of Polar Week and for the occasion, we are very excited to announce that we have prepared fun activities for primary school and (late) secondary school level students to chat about polar science being done in Belgium. And we would like to come to YOUR school!
We’ve created a short Google form in english & French for you to sign up your school, and we’ll draw four schools for this year. You’ll be contacted in early April if you were chosen and we can then co-organize our visit (when/focus/etc)!

A short description of the primary school level and secondary school level activities is given below in English and French (the Dutch version coming soon)!
Note that this year, we will only be able to offer visits in French or English (you can choose) as our Dutch speaking members won’t be available for this year. However, we remain open for any collaboration and encourage Dutch speaking schools to contact us in case they have specific suggestions.
OUR ACTIVITIES for primary schools
Our aim is to get the children excited about polar sciences and realize it’s a very fun field and open to everyone (we have a lot of women scientists in our organization!). Requirements for the day: projector/screen to show presentations to the children.

Meet & greet
Two scientists will give a little introduction about who they are, where they work, and start off with a short quiz to break the ice and see what peculiar facts the children know about polar regions and animals. This will be done using some projected slides. Quiz-type activity! Estimated time: 10 min
Deux scientifiques se présenteront brièvement, expliqueront qui ils sont et où ils travaillent. L’activité commencera par un petit quiz pour briser la glace et voir quels faits intéressants les enfants connaissent sur les régions et les animaux polaires. Cette activité sera réalisée à l'aide d’une projection de diapositives. Activité de type quiz ! Durée estimée : 10 minutes.

Meet scientists
The scientists will then talk about their research, showing what they work on, what a workday involves. We will try to always have one of the scientists who has done fieldwork so they can present what it is like to work in polar regions! This will include photos and videos. They will also talk about why they decided to become polar scientists. This might include some real-world material when possible to carry. This will be done using projected slides, more passive, but includes Q&A of course! Estimated time: 15 min x2
Les deux scientifiques parleront ensuite de leurs recherches, en montrant le sujet de leur travail et ce qu'implique une journée de travail. Nous essaierons toujours d’avoir un scientifique qui a travaillé sur le terrain pour qu'il puisse parler de ce que c'est que de travailler dans les régions polaires ! Ils présenteront des photos et des vidéos. Ils expliqueront également pourquoi ils ont décidé de devenir des scientifiques polaires. Si possible, ils apporteront du matériel qu’ils utilisent dans leurs recherches. L'exposé se fera à l'aide de diapositives projetées, de manière plus passive, mais comprendra bien sûr une partie questions-réponses ! Durée estimée : 15 min x2

Polar food web
This is a game that we have played successfully in many classrooms before where the children help to decide where the polar animals go in the food chain, at the north and south pole. This activity is hands-on where the children get to place the animals in the right place on the posters using velcro. Estimated time: 30 min
Il s'agit d'un jeu qui a déjà eu grand succès dans de nombreuses classes ! Les enfants déterminent la position des animaux polaires dans la chaîne alimentaire au Pôle Nord et au Pôle Sud. Il s'agit d'une activité pratique où les enfants doivent placer les animaux au bon endroit sur des affiches à l'aide de velcro. Durée estimée : 30 minutes

How to pack for polar field work
This is a game where the children will learn what kinds of things scientists need to bring with them to the field, from scientific equipment to personal belongings! It is also a hands-on activity where they will have many items in front of them (real and cards) that they have to decide if they place in their miniature suitcase or not and we will discuss why. The children will also then get to try on various types of polar field equipment: field boots, big parkas, gloves, mittens, protection gloves etc. Estimated time: 30 min
Ce jeu permet aux enfants d'apprendre quels types d'objets les scientifiques doivent emporter avec eux sur le terrain, du matériel scientifique aux effets personnels ! Il s'agit également d'une activité pratique : les enfants auront devant eux de nombreux objets (réels ou sous forme de cartes) qu'ils devront décider de placer ou non dans leur petite valise et nous discuterons des raisons de ce choix. Les enfants pourront ensuite essayer différents types d'équipements polaires : bottes de terrain, grandes parkas, gants, moufles, gants de protection, etc. Durée estimée : 30 minutes.

Meet a polar explorer
This activity allows students to meet a scientist who has gone on an expedition to the Arctic or Antarctic. The idea is that students can ask questions about the scientist's background and experience in the field. The scientist will give a presentation of the poles (geography, climate, biology) as well as a personal presentation.
Duration: 30 min presentation + 20 min (depending on the interest and preparation of the participants) of questions and answers. Equipment: a projector
L’activité proposée permet aux élèves de rencontrer un.e scientifique parti.e en expédition en mer arctique ou en Antarctique. L’idée est que les étudiants puissent poser toutes les questions quant au parcours du scientifique et son expérience sur le terrain. Le.la scientifique proposera une présentation des pôles (géographie, climat, biologie) ainsi qu’une présentation personnelle. Durée : 30 min de présentation + 20 min de questions-réponses (durée variable en fonction de l’intérêt et la préparation des participants). Matériel : un projecteur.

"Save the glaciers! - an educational escape game
As a second activity, we will give a presentation on glaciers in general and then play an escape game all together called "Save the glaciers!
"Save the Glaciers!" is an educational escape game designed for teenagers (11-18 years old) to learn what glaciers are, how they move, how they react to climate change and what we can do to slow their melting. This educational material was created and shared for free by the PROTECT project, you can play an online or real world version!
Duration: 30 min of presentation + 20 min of game (variable duration according to the speed of the students to solve the enigmas) --!!! the escape game can only be played by 10 students at a time (2 teams of 5 people). Equipment: a projector
Nous proposons en deuxième activité une présentation sur les glaciers de manière générale et un jeu sous forme d’escape game nommé « Sauvez les glaciers ! ». « Sauvez les glaciers ! » est un jeu éducatif d’évasion conçu pour les adolescents (11-18 ans) pour apprendre ce que sont les glaciers, comment ils se déplacent, comment ils réagissent au changement climatique et ce que nous pouvons faire pour ralentir leur fonte. Ce matériel éducatif a été créé et partagé gratuitement par le projet PROTECT, vous pouvez jouer une version en ligne ou dans le monde réel! Durée : 30 min de présentation + 20 min de jeu (durée variable en fonction de la rapidité des élèves à résoudre les énigmes) -- !!! l’escape game ne peut être joué qu’avec 10 élèves à la fois (2 équipes de 5 personnes).
