The European Polar Board (EPB) and European Polar Coordination Office (EPCO) put out a call last month to urge EU decision-makers to secure dedicated polar research funding in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF 2028–2034) under FP10.

The MFF is a seven-year framework regulating the EU’s annual budget. In other words, it decides how much money is spent, and where it is spent. The upcoming one will cover the period from 2028 to 2034. FP10 is the 10th Framework Programme for Research & Innovation, the successor to Horizon Europe, which will end in 2027. It will be the EU’s flagship research program from 2028 to 2034.

The MFF will soon be discussed at the European Parliament. The future of European polar research and scientific collaboration will be impacted by whether or not it gets dedicated funding in the upcoming Framework Program. This decision is yet to be made.

If you are part of the European research community or an otherwise relevant actor, the EPB invites you to make your voice heard by signing their open call to secure Europe’s leadership in Polar Research by targeted investments in FP10 via this form.
