Cathrin Wittig

PhD Student
University of Ghent & Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences

Hei. I am Cathrin, a PhD student at Ghent University (UGent) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS). I did my master in marine geology at the University of Kiel, Germany and fell in love with the Arctic environment during an ERASMUS year in Bergen and my master thesis at the UiT in Tromsø, Norway. In my current project I investigate the role of benthic macrofauna in sedimentary iron recycling and the ice-to-ocean iron transport in Greenlandic Fjord systems. I especially seek to identify the links between benthic macrofauna communities, bioturbation and geochemical iron cycling and build a combined diagenetic model depicting the full picture of iron geochemistry in Arctic fjord sediments. I joined APECS to meet other fellow Arctic researchers, share my research and exchange information about exciting ongoing projects in the Arctic.
